Garrett Center History


The Eleanor and Charles Garrett Center on Transition and Disability Studies was established in 2017 to provide information, professional development, training, and resources to preservice teachers, practicing educators, students with disabilities, families, state agencies, and the community.


Awards & Recognition

2024-2028 United States Department of Education Rural Postsecondary Economic Development Grant:

Through this grant, the Garrett Center supports students with disabilities in rural Texas communities by helping them enroll, identify funding sources, complete postsecondary coursework, and prepare for competitive employment.

2023 Sam Houston Cane Award:

This award acknowledges university entities that give back to the institution in terms of spirit, tradition, and service.

2019-2024 Texas Education Agency Technical Assistance Network:

This grant led the state-wide Student-Centered Transitions Network (SCTN) to support educators in Texas. Resources and trainings are now located at Texas SPED Support



About the Garretts

Mrs. Eleanor Garrett is an alumna of SHSU, having graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1954 and a Master of Education in 1955. Mrs. Garrett taught in Trinity, Nederland, Vidor, Port Neches, and Garland. Mr. Charles Garrett graduated in engineering from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. Their company, Garrett Metal Detectors, has become the world's largest manufacturer of metal detection equipment for law enforcement, military, security, and hobbyists. The Garretts shared a common goal of enhancing educational services for children, particularly those with disabilities, in Texas.

The generous support from Mr. and Mrs. Garrett provides scholarships for SHSU students, as well as funding for an endowed chair position and an endowed faculty position in special education. The Teacher Education Center at SHSU and the Garrett Center on Transition and Disability Studies are named in honor of the Garretts.
